Sources de Garm

The Springs of Garm in the Rasht valley of central Tajikistan are located in one of the most remote and least-visited regions of Central Asia — a mountainous corridor between the Pamir Alai and the Afghan Hindukush whose Tajik-speaking people have maintained traditional pastoral and agricultural lifestyles relatively untouched by Soviet collectivisation or modern development. The bicarbonate springs emerge from the ancient metamorphic and volcanic geology of the Zarafshan range at temperatures suitable for bathing, used by local communities in a long thermal tradition of relaxation and well-being rooted in Tajik folk culture. The surrounding Rasht valley landscape of river gorges, walnut forests and ancient stone villages against a backdrop of 5,000-metre peaks is of extraordinary natural beauty. Access from Dushanbe requires a long mountain road journey, but the reward is an encounter with traditional Tajik mountain culture and thermal bathing in a setting of genuine Pamir wilderness.
