Sanatorium Obigarm is a historic Soviet-era thermal health resort on the banks of the Vakhsh River in western Tajikistan, whose bicarbonate-rich radon spring waters were among the most medically acclaimed therapeutic waters in the former Soviet Union. The sanatorium, constructed in the Stalinist period and used for decades by Soviet health workers and patients from across the USSR, is named after the river crossing — 'Obigarm' meaning 'warm water crossing' in Tajik. The site's Soviet heritage, combined with the spectacular Vakhsh canyon scenery and the genuine therapeutic properties of the spring, give Obigarm a unique historical and balneological character.
Insider tip — Sanatorium Obigarm stands in the Rasht Valley east of Dushanbe, where Soviet-era treatment blocks are fed by bicarbonate springs at 39°C rising through Paleozoic granite. The facility once drew visitors from across the USSR for its rich mineralogy and mountain air at 1,100 metres elevation. The Vakhsh River gorge below the sanatorium narrows into a dramatic canyon accessible by a short trail. The complex retains its Soviet wellness architecture, giving it an almost archaeological quality alongside the invigorating baths.
