Terme Morshyn is a mineral spa town in the Stryi district of Lviv Oblast in western Ukraine, drawing chlorurated saline springs in a setting of spruce forest and Art Nouveau pavilion architecture that represents one of the most intact examples of Austro-Hungarian spa town planning preserved east of the Carpathian watershed. The elegant colonnaded cure halls, the lime-tree alleys, the mineral spring pump rooms, and the wooden villas of Morshyn were designed and built between 1895 and 1914 by architects working in the Galician branch of the Vienna Secession style, and their survival through Soviet collectivisation and two world wars gives Morshyn a historical completeness rare among the former Habsburg spa towns of Central Europe. The saline waters of Morshyn, long associated with relaxation and well-being in the local thermal tradition, flow in a town that functions both as a working spa resort and as a living museum of the confident cosmopolitan ambition that the Austro-Hungarian Empire brought to the eastern Carpathian frontier before 1914.

Insider tip — Morshyn in the Carpathian foothills of Lviv Oblast is one of the oldest mineral spa resorts in western Ukraine, known since the 16th century for its sodium-chloride brines used primarily for digestive and metabolic treatments. The tightly packed sanatorium district lined with Soviet-era colonnades and formal gardens has a distinctive Eastern European grandeur. The weekly mineral water drinking cure schedule, combining brine from multiple spring pavilions, is a medically structured experience unlike any Western spa.
