At the foot of the San Juan Mountains near Ridgway, Colorado, Orvis Hot Springs sits on land long used by the Tabeguache band of the Ute people, who regarded the waters as sacred — Chief Ouray himself encouraged his people to soak here for their calming effect. By the turn of the twentieth century the site had become a commercial hot springs, today set among gardens and mountain views.
