Ouray in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado is known as the 'Switzerland of America' for its spectacular alpine scenery, situated in a box canyon surrounded by 4,000-metre peaks and home to natural sulphate- and calcium-rich hot springs that feed the Ouray Hot Springs Pool — a large outdoor municipal pool at 2,270 metres elevation that has been a community institution since 1926. The springs, flowing at around 55°C from fissures in the mountain bedrock, were used by the Ute people long before the mining era transformed Ouray into one of Colorado's most beautiful Victorian mountain towns.
