The Gobu Bathhouse, also known as the Haji Abdulla Hammam, was built in 1882 in the village of Qobu on the Absheron Peninsula near Baku, Azerbaijan, by the local philanthropist Haji Abdulla Kazim oğlu. Its waters draw on the naturally sulphurous springs of the Absheron Peninsula, where geothermal activity has sustained bathing and therapeutic water traditions for centuries in one of the world's oldest oil-producing regions. Protected today as a historical monument awaiting restoration, the bathhouse represents the 19th-century Azerbaijani tradition of private charitable bath construction, through which prosperous merchants provided communal hygiene facilities for their villages as acts of religious and civic generosity.

Insider tip — The Gobu bathhouse near Baku draws on the Absheron Peninsula's geologically active underground, where sulfurous waters rise through the same fault systems that make Azerbaijan one of the world's oldest oil-producing regions. The distinct sulfurous aroma signals high mineral concentrations traditionally appreciated for the skin. Bathers typically alternate between the warm sulfurous pool and cooler rinsing areas. The surrounding Absheron landscape, with its mud volcanoes and oil fields, adds a uniquely industrial-geological atmosphere to the visit.
