The Haji Safarali Bathhouse is a historic hammam in the village of Novkhani, Absheron District near Baku, Azerbaijan, completed in 1907 and notable for its angular site plan adapted to the corner plot at the main road junction, which influenced the unique architectural arrangement of the building. Novkhani is a village on the Absheron Peninsula outside Baku, the oil-rich peninsula that was transformed by the petroleum boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, attracting wealth that funded both industrial infrastructure and traditional cultural buildings such as this hammam. The 1907 construction date places the hammam at the height of the Baku oil boom, when newly wealthy Azerbaijani merchants and industrialists endowed traditional Islamic communal buildings alongside modern commercial and residential architecture.

Insider tip — The Haji Safarali bathhouse is part of the rich historic hammam heritage of Baku's Absheron Peninsula — the rocky Caspian landscape that was simultaneously an ancient Zoroastrian sacred site of eternal fire and the birthplace of the modern oil industry. The bathhouse served communities of the medieval and early-modern city, preserving the bathing culture of a region where Persian, Turkic, and Caucasian traditions blended before petroleum transformed Baku into the Caspian world's great industrial metropolis.
