Insider tip — Futsukaichi Onsen in the Chikushino region of Fukuoka is one of northern Kyushu's oldest hot springs — mentioned in the 8th-century Man'yōshū poetry anthology, it has welcomed bathers for over 1,300 years. The springs serve a historic area near Dazaifu, the ancient administrative capital of Kyushu and site of the great Tenmangū shrine dedicated to the deified scholar Sugawara no Michizane, in a region of profound importance to Japan's early imperial and literary history.
