Kitayuzawa Onsen is a hot spring resort in Date City, Hokkaido, in the volcanic mountain zone south of Sapporo where the Noboribetsu-Date volcanic cluster generates abundant thermal activity, whose sulfated and calcareous mineral waters have attracted bathers to this scenic highland area in the shadow of the Hokkaido mountains. Date City, named after the Date clan of samurai who settled Hokkaido from northeastern Honshu during the Meiji-era colonization of the island, preserves a distinctive cultural identity that bridges the northern Japanese frontier tradition and the ancient feudal heritage of the Tohoku region. The calcareous sulfated waters of Kitayuzawa Onsen are appreciated for the comfort they bring to muscles and skin, making this one of the valued thermal bathing destinations in the thermally rich volcanic zone of central Hokkaido.

Insider tip — Kitayuzawa Onsen clusters around the southern flanks of the Orofure mountain range in Hokkaido, where calcium-sulfate springs emerge among birch and mixed conifer forest. The milky-white water has a strong mineral scent and is reputed locally for skin-softening properties. The area is a base for hiking the Orofure pass and birdwatching in the Shiraoi wetlands, and many trail walkers finish their day at the large outdoor pools. Winter draws snowshoers and the outdoor baths, dusted with snow on their timber frames, are among Hokkaido's most photogenic thermal scenes.
