Tarudaki Onsen

Tarudaki Onsen sits near the border of Oita and Kumamoto prefectures in the heart of Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island and its most geothermally active. The region is dense with volcanic mountains, deep gorges, and an onsen culture so thoroughly embedded in daily life that the distinction between bathing and belonging almost dissolves.

The spring flows at a balanced pH of 7.3, with the geothermal warmth characteristic of this part of Kyushu. The atmosphere at Tarudaki suggests a mountain onsen in the classic mould: outdoor rotenburo framed by dense forest, timber and stone architecture, steam rising into cool air.
