Shiobara-Arayu Onsen is a high-altitude hot spring within the Shiobara Onsenkyō resort cluster in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, reached by driving approximately ten minutes from the old town of Shiobara along the Nichi-En Momiji Line toward the Takahara highland system at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters on the flank of Fujisan, a peak within the Takahara volcanic group that continues to emit water vapor as evidence of its active volcanic status. Four ryokan inns serve this secluded high-altitude spring area, providing a quieter and more rustic bathing experience than the more developed lower valley springs of Shiobara, and the sulfurous and carbonated mineral waters carry the strong volcanic character typical of springs located close to active geothermal vents. The combination of elevation, active volcanic setting, and powerfully mineralized waters makes Arayu Onsen one of the most dramatically situated and therapeutically distinctive hot springs within the Shiobara Onsenkyō resort complex.
