Yu no Tani Onsenkyo is a cluster of seven thermal springs—Yakushi, Mugikusa, Imokawa, Oritatami, Oyu, Tochiomata, and Komanoyuyu—arranged along the forested valley leading toward the Okutadami reservoir in Uonuma City, Niigata, in the shadow of Mt. Echigo-Komagatake (2,003 m) whose snowy profile dominates clear-sky views from the valley floor. The onsenkyo (spring cluster) unfolds through a landscape of deep snow country, where winter brings several meters of accumulation and the thermal waters take on their greatest restorative significance for communities isolated by cold and snowfall. Simple alkaline waters throughout the cluster serve the centuries-old Japanese tradition of communal therapeutic bathing in mountain wilderness settings.
