Tamagawa Ryokan was a traditional hot spring inn in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture, operating under its formal name Kappou Ryokan Tamagawa—a kaiseki cuisine inn with an acidic thermal spring on the grounds, an unusual mineral character for a spring in the lowland Chiba area more commonly associated with iodine and saline coastal springs. The acidic waters, with their characteristic sharp mineral quality and skin-stimulating properties, made the inn a distinctive destination among the suburban thermal facilities of greater Tokyo for those who appreciated the less common water types of Japan's onsen repertoire. The ryokan closed permanently in 2020, a casualty of the economic disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, ending a chapter in the history of Funabashi's urban onsen tradition.

Insider tip — Tamagawa Ryokan is an unusual lodging in the Saitama foothills offering access to acidic onsen waters with a pH level that provides strong antibacterial and skin-clearing properties. Acidic springs are among the rarest onsen types in Japan, and their astringent quality is particularly prized for treating skin conditions. Located within easy reach of western Tokyo by train, this retreat provides a genuine mineral-spring experience without the long journey to more remote destinations. Guests should limit initial soak times as the acidic waters are potent even at moderate temperatures.
