Sefalık Baths

The Sefalık Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam in Aybastı District of Ordu Province on Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast, in a small mountain district of steep forested valleys and terraced hazelnut orchards that characterise the hinterland of the Black Sea. Aybastı's isolated highland communities maintained the hammam as a crucial institution for communal hygiene in villages where private bathing facilities were unavailable, and the weekly bath was as much a social event as a practical necessity — neighbours meeting in the warm steam to share news, arrange marriages, and strengthen community bonds. The name Sefalık carries connotations of comfort, ease, and pleasure, reflecting the traditional understanding of the hammam visit as a restorative respite from the physical demands of mountain farming life.
