The Yörükler Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam in the 19 Mayıs District of Samsun Province on Turkey's central Black Sea coast. The name Yörükler refers to the Yörük semi-nomadic Turkic pastoral communities who settled much of rural Anatolia during and after the Ottoman period, bringing their mobile bathing traditions into contact with the fixed hammam culture of established towns and eventually adopting the heated stone bath as their permanent weekly institution. Located in a district named for 19 May 1919 — the day Mustafa Kemal Atatürk landed at Samsun to launch the Turkish War of Independence, one of the defining moments of modern Turkish national identity — the baths stand at the layered intersection of ancient bathing tradition and the founding of the Turkish Republic.
