Insider tip — Kaunos was an ancient Carian-Lycian port city near modern Dalyan, famous for its dramatic rock-cut temple tombs carved into cliffs above the Dalyan delta where loggerhead turtles still nest. The Roman Bath at Kaunos served a city that was an important harbour until its silting up turned it into a malarial backwater — the Romans built thermae here in a setting of extraordinary beauty where the Mediterranean meets the reed-fringed channels of the Köyceğiz lagoon.
