Babakale Baths

The Babakale Baths are a historic hammam in Ayvacık District of Çanakkale Province, near the village of Babakale — the westernmost permanently inhabited settlement on the Asian continent, positioned at the very tip of the Biga Peninsula where the Aegean Sea and the Dardanelles converge. Babakale's 18th-century Ottoman castle and lighthouse mark Turkey's most westerly point on the Asian shore, and the village's hammam served a fishing and olive-cultivating community at this remarkable geographical extremity. The baths provided essential hygienic services to a coastal community whose daily life was defined by the rhythms of the sea and whose location — at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, just north of the ancient Troad — placed it at one of history's most consequential maritime passages.
