Örcün Baths

The Örcün Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam in Gölcük District of Kocaeli Province on the Gulf of İzmit in northwestern Turkey, in the naval and industrial city built near the ancient Nicomedia — the great eastern Roman imperial capital chosen by Diocletian as his seat in 286 CE. The Gulf of İzmit's strategic importance as a deep maritime channel connecting the Sea of Marmara to the agricultural and industrial hinterland of northwestern Anatolia has made this region a centre of both military and commercial activity since antiquity, and the Örcün Baths served the community of a district that balanced the demands of shipbuilding, heavy industry, and traditional Anatolian rural life. The hammam reflects the Ottoman civic bathing tradition in a region whose strategic maritime significance has given it a consistently cosmopolitan and commercially active character.
