Başçavuş Baths

The Başçavuş Baths (Chief Guard Baths) are a historic Ottoman hammam in Yozgat District, the administrative centre of Yozgat Province in central Anatolia, in a high plateau city surrounded by the steppes and forests of north-central Turkey. The name Başçavuş (Chief Sergeant or Head Guard) suggests an association with the Ottoman military or security administration — the çavuş was an important officer rank in the Ottoman military hierarchy responsible for maintaining order — and the hammam may have served the garrison or security personnel of a provincial capital. Yozgat, founded in the 18th century by the Canikli dynasty and later becoming an Ottoman provincial administrative centre, developed a distinctive urban culture on the central Anatolian plateau that the hammam served as a cornerstone of civic social life.
