Kılıçarslan Baths

The Kılıçarslan Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam in Sinanpaşa District of Afyonkarahisar Province in west-central Anatolia, named after Kılıçarslan — the famous throne name of the Seljuk sultans of Rum, most notably Sultan Kılıçarslan I who defeated the First Crusade at the Battle of Dorylaeum in 1097 and Kılıçarslan II who ruled a powerful Anatolian empire in the late 12th century. The naming of an Afyonkarahisar-area hammam after the great Seljuk sultan reflects the deep resonance of Seljuk historical memory in western Anatolia, where the Seljuks established the Turkish presence that the Ottoman Empire later inherited and built upon. The baths served the community of Sinanpaşa, a district named for the Ottoman architect Sinan Paşa, in a region of multiple historical layers reaching from Phrygian antiquity through Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
