Nogurisawa Onsen

Nogurisawa Onsen—Wild Pear Marsh Spring—takes its name from a wetland landscape where the wild pear tree (noguri) grows at the margins of the marshy ground, creating the characteristic edge-habitat imagery of Japan's montane bogland environments where thermal springs and peat marshes occasionally coexist in the same volcanic highland landscape. Rising in Gunma Prefecture, this spring exists within one of Japan's most thermally active inland prefectures, where the volcanic geology that produces exceptional hot springs also creates the mineralogically interesting soil conditions that support distinctive highland plant communities including the wild pear trees of the spring's name.
