Terme Mitrovica Banje draws bicarbonated mineral springs near Mitrovica in northern Kosovo, close to the Ibar river whose bridge through the centre of the city has been the most symbolically charged division in post-war Kosovo, separating the Albanian-majority south from the Serbian-majority north in a contested urban geography that NATO peacekeepers have maintained since 1999 under one of the most complex post-conflict security arrangements in European history. The mineral springs of the Mitrovica region emerge from the geologically active zone of the Trepca mining basin, one of the richest lead, zinc, and silver ore deposits in Europe, whose mines have been worked since Roman times and whose twentieth-century industrial exploitation under Tito's Yugoslavia created the economic backbone of an entire region whose post-war deindustrialisation has been one of the most painful dimensions of Kosovo's difficult independence. The bicarbonated waters of Banje, valued for muscular and circulatory comfort, flow in a landscape where the layers of Roman, medieval, Ottoman, Yugoslav, and post-conflict history are compressed into a river valley whose contested bridge has become one of the defining images of unresolved European division in the twenty-first century.

Insider tip — The Mitrovica bridge over the Ibar is the symbol of the post-conflict divisions of the Balkans — guarded by NATO soldiers (KFOR), it separates two communities that sometimes cannot cross it freely. A thermal spa in the city of impossible dialogue.
