Akwar Hot Springs is a natural thermal site near Chiweta on the western shore of Lake Malawi in the northern part of the country, where chloride-rich hot springs emerge in the rift valley landscape at the base of the dramatic Livingstonia Escarpment overlooking the vast blue expanse of one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes. The springs are relatively undeveloped and accessed as part of the broader experience of the northern Lake Malawi shoreline, where the combination of geothermal spring activity, enormous freshwater lake, and towering escarpment scenery creates a landscape of exceptional geological drama. The Chiweta area, on the northern extremity of the lake tourism circuit, preserves a wilder and less visited character than the resort-oriented southern shores, making the hot springs a destination for more adventurous thermal bathers.
