About seven kilometres from Batang Kali town in the Hulu Selangor district, the Hulu Tamu hot spring owes its discovery to chance: a villager searching for a lost buffalo calf reportedly found, to his surprise, that the water the animal was drinking was scalding hot. During the Second World War, Japanese soldiers are said to have used the site as a resting place for those injured during the invasion of Malaya.
Fully refurbished in 2015 under the management of the Hulu Selangor District Council (Majlis Daerah Hulu Selangor), the site was redeveloped as an open-air relaxation area, with several pools of varying temperatures, gazebos and wooden walkways, just over an hour's drive from Kuala Lumpur.
