Terme Fojnica is set in the forested valley of the Fojnica river in central Bosnia, where bicarbonated mineral springs have been in continuous use for bathing since at least the Ottoman period and the town itself is associated with one of the most remarkable documents of religious tolerance in the medieval world. The Ahdname of Fojnica, granted by Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror to the Franciscan friars of Fojnica in 1463, guaranteed the freedom of Christian worship and the protection of the clergy and their churches within the newly conquered Ottoman territories, and the original parchment is preserved today in the Franciscan monastery that still stands in the town. The thermal springs, the ancient monastery, and the surrounding landscape of Bosnian highland villages make Fojnica a deeply layered destination where Ottoman history, Christian heritage, and the long bathing tradition of the spring waters coexist in an atmosphere of quiet authenticity.
