Teplice Spa

Teplice in the Ústí nad Labem region of Bohemia is the oldest thermal spa town in Central Europe, with hot sulphurous springs documented since the 12th century and Roman bathing infrastructure now confirmed by archaeological excavation. It is the most populous Czech spa town, with a population of around 51,000, and its thermal tradition attracted Beethoven, Goethe, Chopin and Richard Wagner — Beethoven and Goethe famously met at Teplice in 1812 in an encounter that became legendary in musical history. The sulphurous springs, which emerge at around 38°C, are appreciated in a long tradition of thermal well-being and locomotor comfort, and the spa district of the town preserves some of the finest Baroque and Classicist park architecture in Bohemia. The surrounding Bohemian Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), with their former silver mining heritage and the sandstone landscape of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park nearby, enrich any spa visit with geological and cultural history.
