Caldes de Boi is the highest-altitude thermal spa in the Iberian Peninsula, set at 1,440 metres in the spectacular Boi valley of the Pyrenean High Ribagorça district in Catalonia, where an extraordinary cluster of 37 natural springs of varying bicarbonate composition emerge from the granite and metamorphic formations of the Central Pyrenees, producing some of the most geologically diverse thermal waters in any single alpine valley in Europe. The balneario has operated since the early 19th century in a setting that combines Pyrenean mountain grandeur with easy access to the Val de Boi — a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing nine 11th-century Romanesque churches whose Lombard bell towers and Byzantine-influenced frescoes represent the finest ensemble of pre-Romanesque art in the Iberian Peninsula. The combination of 37 distinct thermal springs at high altitude, the UNESCO Romanesque art heritage of the Boi valley, and the Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park just minutes away makes Caldes de Boi one of the most scenically and culturally exceptional spa destinations in all of Spain.

Insider tip — The Vall de Boí, with its 9 Romanesque churches from the 11th century listed by UNESCO, is a treasure of Catalan Romanesque art — the Lombard bell towers and the frescoes (now at the MNAC in Barcelona) are among the finest in world Romanesque art. Thermal springs among these jewels.
