Balneario de La Hermida

Balneario de La Hermida in the Peñarrubia municipality of Cantabria occupies one of the most geographically dramatic positions of any spa in Spain — deep within the Hermida gorge, a spectacular 20-kilometre limestone canyon carved by the Nansa river in the Picos de Europa foothills, where vertical cliffs rising 500 metres above the valley floor create a landscape of almost oppressive natural grandeur. The sulphurous sodium bicarbonate springs emerge from the limestone walls of the gorge at temperatures well suited to relaxed bathing. The Hermida gorge itself is one of Cantabria's most impressive geological features, with endemic plants, lammergeier vultures nesting in the cliff faces and the ancient limestone trails of the Picos de Europa massif accessible above. The balneario's position at the bottom of this dramatic canyon, with sunlight reaching the valley floor only for a few hours daily, creates an atmosphere of exceptional seclusion and wild nature.
