Balneario Sierra Alhamilla

Balneario Sierra Alhamilla, situated in the dramatic volcanic hills of the Sierra Alhamilla near Pechina in Almería province, is one of Andalusia's most historically evocative thermal spas — an 18th-century neo-Moorish establishment whose Baroque-Arabic architectural flourishes recall the long Muslim tradition of thermal bathing in Al-Andalus, set in a semi-arid landscape of badlands and volcanic rock that hosted dozens of Spaghetti Western film productions in the nearby Tabernas desert. The chloride waters, emerging hot from the volcanic geology of the Betic Cordillera at one of the highest concentrations in southern Spain, have been used since at least the Arab period as part of local wellness and relaxation tradition. The surrounding Almería province — with Europe's only true semi-desert at Tabernas, the Cabo de Gata biosphere reserve, and the Alcazaba of Almería — provides one of Spain's most geologically and cinematically extraordinary backdrops for thermal bathing.
