Baño de la Morería

The Baño de la Morería (Bath of the Moorish Quarter) is a historic Arab bath associated with the morería — the Moorish residential quarter — of a Spanish city, representing the hammam tradition that continued among Muslim populations living under Christian rule after the Reconquista. In cities across the Crown of Castile and Aragon, morerías maintained hammams for their Muslim residents, who were required by Islamic law to maintain ritual purity through regular bathing, a practice tolerated by Christian rulers as an accommodation of religious difference in a still-plural society. This bath reflects the complex cultural negotiations of medieval Spain, where communal bathing survived as a practice within designated Muslim quarters even as the broader Islamisation of public space was systematically reversed.
