Local legend credits the Romans with discovering the properties of the Adour river mud and the Nèhe spring, after an aging dog reportedly regained its vigour following time spent in the river's mudflats.
Founded in 1980 by Éliane Pressigout, the family-run establishment specialises in peloid therapy — the application of heated mud to the skin — and in turpentine showers, a treatment made from pine resin characteristic of the Landes forest. Dax remains one of the most renowned spa towns in southwest France.
