At an elevation of over 2,700 metres in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of south-central Colorado, Valley View Hot Springs above Villa Grove is among the most remote and scenically rewarding wild spring experiences in the American West. The Orient Land Trust, which stewards this landscape, maintains it as a clothing-optional sanctuary — one where darkness is genuine, star-fields are extraordinary, and the springs flow across the hillside in their natural, unimproved state.
The waters are iron-rich and thermal, surfacing at 38 °C with a mildly acidic pH of 6.3. The iron content imparts a slight mineral edge and a characteristic reddish staining on the surrounding rocks, visible evidence of the geological forces at work. Multiple pools at different temperatures dot the hillside, each commanding unobstructed views across the San Luis Valley — the broad, flat basin flanked by two mountain ranges that gives this part of Colorado its distinctly otherworldly character.
