Abastumani is a storied mountain spa resort in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southern Georgia, sitting at 1,300 metres within the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. Known since the 19th century as a health retreat favoured by the Russian imperial family, the resort is fed by sulphurous bicarbonate springs that emerge at around 24°C amid dense conifer forests. The pure mountain air at this altitude, combined with the thermal waters, made Abastumani a celebrated mountain retreat during the Soviet era. Today it combines a beautifully preserved historical atmosphere with the unspoiled wilderness of one of the Caucasus's largest protected forests.
Insider tip — Abastumani is a high-altitude Georgian spa village at 1 300 m in the Adjara-Imeri range, historically used as a tuberculosis sanatorium due to its combination of sulfur-tinged bicarbonate springs and exceptionally clean mountain air. The tsarist-era wooden villas and observatory (still operational) give the town a ghost-resort atmosphere of enormous charm. The forested gorge setting keeps temperatures cool even in summer, making the warm springs doubly welcome. Georgia's astronomical observation post here takes advantage of some of the clearest skies in the Caucasus.
