Crikvenica is a coastal resort town in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County on the Kvarner Riviera of the northern Adriatic, where iodine- and chloride-rich Adriatic seawater from the sheltered Kvarner Gulf supports thalassotherapy programs in one of the oldest established seaside wellness destinations in Croatia. The Kvarner Riviera, described as the Nice of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, attracted the Viennese and Budapest aristocracy who built the grand neoclassical hotels and villas still visible along the Crikvenica waterfront in the late 19th century. The exceptional microclimate of the inner Kvarner Gulf — protected from cold winds by the Velebit mountain range, the highest coastal mountain in the Mediterranean at 1,758 metres — gives Crikvenica over 2,600 hours of sunshine per year and one of the mildest winter temperatures on the northern Adriatic, making its thalasso season among the longest of any Adriatic resort.
