High on the Dieng Plateau, over 2,000 meters up in the heart of Central Java, the name derives from 'Di Hyang' — 'abode of the gods' in ancient Javanese — reflecting the site's spiritual history, home since the 8th-9th centuries to the Arjuna temple complex, among the oldest Hindu structures in Java. The plateau is now recognized as an Indonesian national geopark.

The Kawah Sikidang crater, the plateau's most visited feature, releases steam and sulfurous gas through a shifting field of bubbling mud pools. Nearby, the same geothermal activity feeds natural hot-water baths that visitors use to unwind, set against the crisp, cool air typical of these volcanic highlands.

Insider tip — The Dieng Plateau is one of the most volcanically active highland areas in Java, sitting at 2100 m elevation amid ancient Hindu temples and colored crater lakes. Sulfurous hot springs bubble from the ground at 42°C between the temple complexes, and the cool plateau air makes the contrast with warm water especially welcome. Morning fog rolling through the valley creates an ethereal atmosphere around the craters. The plateau is reached by a winding road from Wonosobo — start the ascent before dawn to see the sunrise over the Sindoro and Sumbing volcanoes.
