Terme di Sorano in the tufa landscape of southern Tuscany draws on bicarbonate-sulphate-calcium springs that have been appreciated since Etruscan times in one of Italy's most hauntingly atmospheric landscapes. The springs, which emerge a few kilometres south of the medieval cliff-top town of Sorano — itself built from the same volcanic tufa as the ancient Etruscan tombs that honeycomb the surrounding hills — feed both natural outdoor pools and a small spa establishment. The Tufa Area of Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano is one of Tuscany's most dramatically beautiful but least-visited regions, characterised by deep gorges, Etruscan rock-cut roads and abandoned medieval fortresses.
