Azraq is an oasis town in the eastern Jordanian desert, 100 kilometres east of Amman, historically renowned as one of the only natural water sources in the vast basalt and limestone desert of eastern Jordan, where bicarbonate-rich springs support the wetland habitats of the Azraq Wetland Reserve. The springs, now partially managed to sustain the protected wetland, have supported human settlement in this remote desert outpost since prehistoric times and served as a strategic waterpoint on ancient caravan and military routes. T.E. Lawrence used Azraq castle as his desert headquarters during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18, adding a layer of 20th-century historical drama to a site already steeped in thousands of years of desert travel history.
