Nishihara Onsen

Nishihara Onsen is situated in Nishihara, a town on the eastern slopes of the Aso caldera rim in Kumamoto Prefecture that was severely affected by the April 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes — twin mainshocks of magnitude 6.5 and 7.3 struck within 28 hours of each other, causing landslides and slope failures that were particularly severe in Nishihara's volcanic highland terrain, destroying roads, bridges, and homes and necessitating large-scale evacuation and a years-long reconstruction effort that transformed the community's relationship with the volcanic landscape it inhabits. The surrounding Aso-Kuju National Park landscape of volcanic grasslands, steaming fumaroles, and panoramic caldera views creates a setting of rugged natural beauty that makes Nishihara an important gateway to the broader Aso volcanic experience despite the ongoing earthquake recovery. The onsen here draw on geothermal springs associated with the Aso volcanic system, delivering mineral bathing powered by the same volcanic energy that makes this highland community both dramatically beautiful and vulnerable to the earth's unpredictable geological forces.
