Yamanakako Onsen Ishiwari no Yu, by Lake Yamanaka in Yamanashi Prefecture, draws sulfurous thermal water at 40°C. The bathhouse includes an indoor bath, an outdoor bath (rotenburo) and a sauna.
Insider tip — Lake Yamanakako, highest of the Fuji Five Lakes at 981m, offers the most dramatic Fuji panoramas — Mt. Fuji rises over 3,700 meters above the lake's surface in clear conditions, one of the greatest vertical reliefs visible from any Japanese onsen. 'Ishiwari no Yu' (Rock-splitting Spring) references the volcanic force beneath the lava fields of the Fuji volcanic system. The legendary 'Diamond Fuji' — when the sun exactly aligns with Fuji's summit — can be witnessed from this lakeside in late October and mid-February at sunset.
