Yamanakako Onsen Benifuji no Yu, by Lake Yamanakako in Yamanashi Prefecture, offers sodium-chloride water at 41°C, an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.
Insider tip — Yamanakako Onsen Benifuji no Yu sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Yamanakako at the base of Mount Fuji, where sodium-chloride waters are pumped from deep Miocene sediments beneath the lava fields. On clear days the panoramic window baths offer one of the most dramatic views of Fuji-san in Japan, particularly at sunrise or during winter snowcap season. The reddish tint of the water — giving the bath its name Benifuji, meaning red Fuji — comes from the iron-enriched mineral content. Crowds peak on weekends and national holidays, so a midweek visit rewards the patient traveler.
