Nakagawa Onsen; Buna no Yu is located in Yamakita, Kanagawa Prefecture, in a wooded mountain area. Its sodium-chloride water reaches 41°C. An indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna are on offer.
Insider tip — Buna no Yu at Nakagawa Onsen serves the Tanzawa mountain valley of Yamakita-cho where the alkaline spring has been known as Shogun no Yu (the Shogun's Bath) since Tokugawa Ieyasu used its healing waters during his campaigns in the 1580s. The Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park surrounding the spring preserves the largest beech (buna) forest in the Kanto region — the ancient trees that give this bath its name — and the Nakagawa valley trail through century-old beech groves is rated among the finest forest walks accessible from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
