The Limes-Thermen in Aalen, Baden-Württemberg, owe their existence to geologist Eugen Seibold, who identified the area's thermal potential as early as 1948. Exploratory drilling only began in 1979, eventually striking, in March 1980 at a depth of 650 metres, a fluoride-rich calcium-sodium-sulphate thermal spring flowing at 36.4°C with a rate of about 12 litres per second.

Architect Rudolf Wienands designed the building in an ancient Roman style, a nod to the city's past and its proximity to the Germanic limes. Inaugurated on 19 April 1985 after construction costing 28 million Deutsche Mark, the Limes-Thermen today feature five heated pools, four types of sauna and a wellness care area. Attendance peaked in 2000, with over 344,000 visitors that year.

Insider tip — Limes-Thermen in Aalen takes its name from the ancient Roman Limes frontier that once passed through this part of Swabia, and the architecture subtly nods to that heritage with stone detailing and mosaic accents. The thermal water at 34°C is mildly mineralised, gentle enough for children and seniors, making it a true family destination in the Swabian highlands. A relaxation area with panoramic windows faces the green slopes of the Swabian Alb. History buffs can combine the visit with the nearby Limes World Heritage path and the Roman fort museum.
