In Bad Ditzenbach, on the slopes of the Swabian Jura, the Sisters of Mercy of Untermarchtal drilled between 1969 and 1971, the first thermal borehole on the Swabian plateau: at 560 metres deep, they struck the Canisius spring, emerging at 48°C, with a composition of sodium, calcium, chloride and sulphate.

The congregation, which had owned the land since 1890, built the bathing facility in 1973, in keeping with the motto of its founder Vincent de Paul: "love is a deed." Today the water stands out for its naturally high carbon dioxide content, giving the pools — kept around 34-35°C — a light, natural sparkle.
