The 'Sauerbrunnen' of Überkingen already appears in documents dating to around 1200, making it one of the earliest recorded springs in Baden-Württemberg. In the 15th and 16th centuries its water drew a prestigious clientele — Bavarian dukes, Palatine counts and patrician families from Ulm and Augsburg all came here to visit.
The water, crystal clear and lightly sparkling from naturally dissolved carbon dioxide sourced deep underground, rises at a constant temperature year-round regardless of season. The site draws on several distinct springs — sodium-bicarbonate, calcium-bicarbonate and sulphate-bicarbonate — tapped from the different aquifer layers of the Fils valley in Baden-Württemberg.
Insider tip — Thermalbad Überkingen draws one of Germany's strongest natural CO2 carbonic springs in the Fils Valley of the Swabian Alb, where cold bicarbonate water bubbling up through Jurassic limestone has been bottled and bathed in since the 17th century. The spring water is technically cold rather than thermal, but its exceptional carbonation and magnesium content justify its balneological classification. The small spa resort retains a charming period character among the half-timbered houses of the Fils Valley, an hour from Stuttgart.
