In the Wakhan Corridor along the Tajik-Afghan border, Ishkoshim is one of civilisation's outermost outposts at the end of a road that gradually dissolves into the Pamir mountains. At over 2,500 metres elevation, in a landscape of bare gorges and villages surrounded by apricot orchards, an open-air thermal bath emerges at around 38 °C, fed by the fault lines of one of the world's most tectonically active mountain systems.

The bicarbonate-thermal water has a surprising gentleness for such a remote setting. The steam rising into the cold mountain air creates a striking contrast with the austere landscape of the high Pamir-Hindu Kush valleys. Immersion in these warm waters, after hours of driving on stony tracks, is an experience of total and immediate renewal.

The Wakhi and Ismaili communities of the region have maintained a close relationship with these springs for generations, integrating them into the daily life of the villages. Bathing here means sharing a moment in the extraordinary ordinary life of this border region — one of the least accessible and most preserved in Central Asia.

Insider tip — One of the most remote thermal baths in Central Asia, located in the Wakhan Corridor near the Afghan border. Surrounded by Pamir peaks, accessible only by 4WD on rough mountain tracks. Used by nomadic communities for centuries — bring your own towel and patience for the road.
