Insider tip — Dozenkei Onsen takes its name from the Dozenkeikyo gorge carved by the Kamo River through the granite foothills of Mount Ishizuchi in Saijo City. The gorge trail follows the river upstream through maple and beech forest to the sacred precincts of Ishizuchi Shrine, where mountain ascetics have practiced shugendo austerities under cascading waterfalls since the 7th century. Mount Ishizuchi at 1,982 metres is the highest peak in western Japan and draws climbers wielding heavy chain-ladders to ascend its sheer rock faces from late July each year.
