In Bad Herrenalb, in the Black Forest, the search for thermal water dates back to the 19th century: drilling attempts in 1867 and 1869 both came up empty. It was not until 2 January 1971 that the Siebentäler Therme finally opened, designed by Tübingen architect Karl Heinz Angst in a style observers say still feels timeless and functions much like a modern recreational bath today.

Since that opening, Bad Herrenalb has held official recognition as a health resort, its thermal water rich in sodium and calcium. Currently closed for extensive renovation, the facility is run by the municipal utility Stadtwerke Bad Herrenalb and holds several sustainable-tourism certifications as it prepares to reopen.

Insider tip — Siebentaler Therme takes its name from the Sieben Taler - Seven Valleys - of the northern Black Forest, where the spa is nestled in a deeply forested valley near the small Kurort of Bad Herrenalb. The thermal bicarbonate water is gentle on the skin and ideal for long, relaxing soaks in the indoor-outdoor pool complex. The Black Forest setting means guests can combine bathing with hiking the well-marked trails directly from the spa grounds. The nearby ruined Cistercian monastery adds historical depth to the visit.
