Cieplice Slaskie-Zdroj is the oldest operating thermal spa town in Poland, with documented spring use since the 12th century when Benedictine monks first exploited the thermal waters in the Jelenia Gora valley at the foot of the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze) in Lower Silesia. Its fluoride- and radon-rich thermal waters, among the most therapeutically radioactive in Poland, emerge at temperatures up to 44 degrees Celsius and are used for musculoskeletal, rheumatic, and balneological treatments in a resort whose Baroque spa architecture dates from the 18th century under Habsburg patronage. The Karkonosze National Park with the Sniezka peak (1,602 metres) rising above the valley — famous for its rare cloud-sea phenomena and arctic-alpine flora unique in the Sudeten mountains — provides a wilderness backdrop of outstanding natural beauty for one of Central Europe's oldest continuously operating thermal traditions.
Insider tip — Cieplice Slaskie-Zdroj, a spa district of Jelenia Gora in Lower Silesia, hosts Poland's hottest natural thermal springs, emerging at up to 87°C from granite bedrock and cooled before use. The historic spa quarter, one of Poland's oldest resort settlements, features 18th-century bathing pavilions and sanatorium buildings set within a protected park landscape. The high fluoride and radon content gives the water a distinctive mineral character that regulars find deeply soothing.
