Termas de Caldas de Aregos in the Viseu district, overlooking the southern bank of the Douro river, is a historic sulphurous spa resort set in the incised valley where the Douro carves through the schist landscape of the Ribeira Sacra — a region of extraordinary terraced vineyards producing some of Portugal's most characterful wines from the indigenous Touriga Nacional and Jaen grape varieties.
