Deep in Gold Strike Canyon, not far from Hoover Dam, these wild springs have to be earned: the approach follows an unmaintained trail of roughly 5.5 miles round trip, through sand, rock and rope-assisted descents, to reach pools tucked inside the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The effort pays off with a striking setting where warm water meets views of the Colorado River and canyon walls.
Three pools mark the route, with the last being the hottest and offering the clearest views of the river. Free and open within a national recreation area, the site closes in summer due to extreme desert heat and is only passable from October to May — a narrow window for one of Nevada's most dramatic river-side soaks.
